America not a Christian Nation – Legally

During the Coronation of King Charles III of England this year May 2023, the name of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit was invoked several times. The King humbly knelt down and prayed to God for Grace for himself and to become a blessing to people of all faiths. The Lord’s Supper was observed, and the Lord’s Prayer recited, and there was a short exhortation.

This illustrates that the King’s government is derived from a Divine and that the nation can be referred to as a Christian nation. The people in England may not behave nor act like it, they may be destroying the pillars of Christianity, yet they can be pictured as a Christian nation.

Contrary, the Settlers in the New World arrived seeking religious freedom. This notion of religious freedom soon led to conflicts and differences in opinion. They later acknowledged that differences in religious opinions were unavoidable and, even in some cases, valid. Because of these differences the formation of a state church was not feasible but rather people will have the freedom to set up churches as they see fit. Generally, Americans opposed the establishment of a national religion, but many believed in the necessity of religion in public life. This fulfils the Founders intention of supporting religion generally without establishing one sect.

Acceptance of Diversity

Since then, generations after them had grown to tolerate religious diversity. The diversity led to many Christian denominations with various doctrines. So, in drafting the Constitution, the Founders agreed not to favor any one denomination. However, on the federal and state level protestant establishment were supported. The point is that America could not become a Christian Nation because of the reasons given above. It is even more difficult now that other religions are established along with the Christian denominations. With all these some Christians are still influencing legislature, judiciary and executives to make laws that may declare United States a Christian Nation to the point where we fight a jihad war because there are some “sinners” among us. Apparently, they do these because of their love for the country. As mentioned before, the love for America cannot be devoid of love for the Constitution/Bill of Rights, because without that there is no America. Patriotism, loyalty, nationalism, etc. must all be an ideological cornerstone of a federal state for individual states cannot exist without a strong Union.
